Throughout history, a number of cultures and civilizations have begun in the Kingdom of Jordan. Commonly called simply Jordan, the country borders Syria, Israel, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
The Kingdom of Jordan has played a role in the birth of a number of different cultures and civilizations throughout history. The kingdom, usually known simply as "Jordan," is situated between Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Israel and Syria. Unlike its war-torn neighbors that count violence as a part of daily life, visitors to Jordan find only peace and serenity. It has the exotic atmosphere visitors are looking for in a Middle Eastern country, but Jordan is the safest destination in the region.
No matter what your interests, the country has a wide variety of activities to meet your needs. You can pick your meals from a food cart or order from a fine dining restaurant. You can also ride a camel, visit a stunning art museum or learn about the history of world religions. The locals are friendly and helpful. They are proud of their home, their culture and their unique traditions, and they are happy to show it off. Sometimes, tourists even get invited into a family home in Jordan for a traditional meal! Culture and religion are still paramount in Jordan. Starting at dawn, Muslim prayer calls from mosques can be heard five times a day across the country.
Jordan is an enchanted land filled with striking scenery, from natural wonders to ancient historical sites. Moses led the Children of Israel through the Jordanian desert, and Alexander the Great crossed through the country on his way to Egypt. You can walk through the same desert today. Remarkably, little of the landscape has changed in the last 2,000 years. In Petra, you can still see massive ancient buildings carved from red sandstone. Jordan also had a role in the Roman Empire, where it served as an extravagant and lavish trading center. Many Roman buildings still exist, and you can visit them throughout Jordan. Jordan’s most modern city is also its capital, Amman. With a population of more than two million, Amman mixes both traditional culture and a Western attitude. The landscape of the city is based on seven large hills, known as the Seven Hills of Amman. Modern stores and restaurants are right beside ancient ruins and relics of long-passed civilizations on each of these seven hills. Towering above Amman, the Citadel still stands to remind both locals and visitors that the city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world.
There is much more to Jordan than Amman, however. Jersah is a well-preserved Greco-Roman city just to the south of the capital. There are forums, columns and temples to visit. Reenactments of chariot races, centurions and gladiators can be seen daily at the Hippodrome in Jerash. Famous from the story of the last days of Moses in the Bible, Mt. Nebo is another ancient site in the region. The mountain grants a view of the Dead Sea and across the Jordan Valley, very similar to what Moses must have seen 3,000 years ago.
The Dead Sea itself is famous for its healing powers, and the area has dozens of spa resorts. If you are interested in an ocean where you can swim, Jordan has 26 kilometers of shoreline thanks to the Gulf of Aqaba. Relaxing on the beach and snorkeling in the nearby reefs are popular pastimes.
Finally, there’s Petra. This lost city is perhaps the most breathtaking location in Jordan. It is a complete ancient city intricately carved into red sandstone rock face. The city could have been carved as early as 309 BC, which is hard to imagine since it would be difficult and painstaking to construct the giant sculpted facades even today.
There are many tours offered in Jordan . Themes for these tours can include architecture, culture, environmental issues, history and religious topics. Holidays in Jordan offer vacationers the chance to see World Heritage sites, beaches, the Dead Sea and modern re-creations of chariot races. Jordan, home to some of the earliest civilizations ever discovered, also played a significant role in the early days of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. In addition, the modern country still likes to show off its history to visitors. This variety makes it a perfect vacation spot for almost any family, no matter what they are looking for. more..
